‘Tohu wa-bohu’ is a Hebrew phrase used in Genesis 1:2 to describe the condition of the earth immediately before God created light. ‘Tohu bohu’ gets translated to ‘chaos, confusion’ when you look it up; wiktionary says תֹהוּ tóhu means “nothingness, void” & בֹּהוּ bóhu, “emptiness, desolation”. Wikipedia however says the Hebrew tohuw translates to "wasteness, that which is laid waste, desert; emptiness, vanity; nothing", and that bohu is just a pun of sorts? There are many competing interpretations of this term and what it means for the beginning of everything, from a confusing state of matter, to the earth itself being confused, as if conscious, in regards to its relations to the heavens, and many others. I have seen tohu bohu used to evoke primordial chaos, where it could also refer descriptively to the dark and abyssal clay safely and meaingfully in the hands of God, and nothing beyond his intent or control. Only my fictional demon knows the truth.
